There are a lot of ways to keep your roof clean – from environment-friendly practices, use of biodegradable cleansers, or chemical solutions that effectively kill moss and other growths.

Let’s check on some of these practices.

Low-pressure cleaning

This practice entails gently cleaning your roof with low-pressure water at 160 psi.  Often, this is accompanied by scrubbing with a brush to take out lichens, algae, and moss.

The most important thing to remember is that roofs should be scrubbed gently ensuring that bristles don’t leave scratches or doesn’t damage your roof.   When you have a clean roof, it is very easy to keep it that way year in, year out.  Once the roof has been cleaned, it only follows that gutters are also cleared of dried leaves and debris.  For dried leaves, a handy blower can do the job of clearing your gutter with unwanted debris.

Check if your roof has sufficient anchors so you or a hired contractor from Ohio will find it easier to clean.   Anyway, installing anchors won’t even cost you that much.  A word of warning though, be sure anchors are attached properly to the sheathing and rafters.

If hire some help, the cost to clean a roof will vary depending on its size, slope, and the extent of growth to be removed or scrubbed out.  Some experts offering roof maintenance and cleaning can come up with a maintenance program.

Cleaning with chemical-based solutions

Many companies offer chemical spraying on roof surfaces and most of the time, these experts use their “signature” solution.  While there are also those who claim that they use environment-friendly solutions, they do not usually disclose what it is made of.   Chemical cleaning is resorted to when there are organic growths on your roof that have proven to be difficult to remove.

There are prepared powders that eradicate moss by killing it.  Since the action of the powder is to kill it, additional work to physically remove the moss from your roof has to be performed.  After moss eradication, the roof has to be washed to remove debris.  Solutions sprayed on the roofing have to be left alone for a time.  Some contractors advise to leave themwithout rinsing off.   Otherwise, a premature rinsing could hamper the killing action of the chemical.

Use of zinc strips

Zinc strips have their share of pros and cons but experts have aired their views about its effectivity:

Its effectivity dwindles over time and shingles that are farthest from the strips wouldn’t get the same zinc treatment as those that are close to it.  Through the years, zinc will definitely leach and will sadly go into stormwater and groundwater.

Whatever roof cleaning method you choose, it is critical that you hire those who can be trusted.   Some will present to you a maintenance program that seeks to offer you convenience.  Study what they are offering and do not hesitate to ask questions before even executing the contract.
